OUR SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENT
ISO 14001
At Rushton’s, we are committed to sustainability and recently achieved ISO 14001 certification, marking a significant milestone in our environmental journey.
This internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems validates our effective practices for managing the environmental impacts of our operations and underscores our dedication to reducing our ecological footprint.
The certification aligns with our core values of regulatory compliance, efficient resource management, and sustainable sourcing from local farmers. By adopting ISO 14001 standards, we enhance operational efficiency, manage environmental risks, and set measurable goals for continuous improvement.
Our mission is to transform the fresh produce supply chain by integrating sustainable practices at every step, ensuring we deliver high-quality, sustainably sourced produce while contributing positively to the planet.
Zero Waste to Landfill
We are excited to announce that we have achieved Zero Waste to Landfill certification, marking a significant milestone in our sustainability journey.
This certification means that none of our waste ends up in landfill; instead, all by-products are reused, recycled, or composted, minimising our environmental footprint and contributing to a circular economy.
Our commitment to this rigorous waste management strategy reflects our dedication to reducing waste, eliminating landfill waste, conserving natural resources, and promoting sustainability.
Achieving Zero Waste to Landfill certification not only underscores our responsibility toward a healthier planet but also demonstrates our ongoing commitment to fostering a more sustainable future for our community and the world.
Together, we can drive meaningful change and cultivate a greener tomorrow.
Food Waste
As a conscious fresh produce supplier, we ensure that none of our food waste goes to waste by partnering with City Harvest London and the New Covent Garden Market Association (NCGMA).
City Harvest collects our surplus food daily, redistributing it to various organizations that serve thousands of healthy meals each week, which helps reduce their grocery costs and allows them to reinvest in essential support services.
Since its launch a decade ago, City Harvest has rescued food for nearly 58 million meals, preventing over 85,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, NCGMA collects our inedible food waste for repurposing into animal feed, contributing to a sustainable food chain.
Through these partnerships, we effectively utilise all our food waste, supporting our environmental goals and promoting a sustainable future for our community. In short, none of our food waste is truly wasted!
Packaging
We are committed to minimising packaging while ensuring the freshness and protection of our produce, using environmentally friendly materials whenever possible.
In 2023, we transitioned to 100% compostable bags for loose products, made from renewable plants like sugarcane, corn, and beetroot, reflecting our dedication to sustainability. These compostable bags can be disposed of in compost, where they break down naturally without leaving microplastics or pollutants.
While we recognise that completely eliminating packaging waste is not feasible due to our complex supply chain, we ensure responsible recycling of all plastic, wood, and cardboard waste at the New Covent Garden Market Association. Additionally, we promote a circular approach by returning boxes for reuse in future orders.
By focusing on compostable materials and reducing overall packaging, we contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
